THE GOOD SAMARITAN

WELCOME TO WEEK 2

PreK (Y1)

How do you show God’s love to others? This week we will see how being kind to others shows God’s love. Let’s see how God showed that Jesus was unusual and set apart for something special.

BIBLE STORY

I am going to say an action out loud but do another. I want you to follow what I say and not what I do. Have children do a few actions with you for example; say "Tap your head” while you jump up and down. Do several examples with your child. Was that easy or hard to follow what I said while I was doing something completely different? Our actions are sometimes that way too! Jesus wants our actions to be the same as our words. Let’s read or listen to a story of 3 people who said they loved God with their words, but watch to see which person showed God’s love with their actions.

Materials: Ink pad or washable markers, Sheet of white paper, Bible

Read the Bible story for the week Luke 10:31-37

Who was the first person who walked by the hurt man? (The Priest)

Why do you think he refused to stop and help? (Maybe he had responsibilities in the temple that he didn’t want to miss)

Who was the next man who walked by the injured man? (The Levite)

Why do you think he didn’t stop to help? (maybe he was afraid the robbers were still around and would hurt him as well)

Who was the third man that saw the hurt man? (A Samaritan)

Why do you think he stopped to help? (He felt compassion for the hurt man)

Do you think the Samaritan was afraid to stay and help?

What do you think caused the Samaritan to stay and help even though he could be in danger as well? (He was showing God’s love which empowered him to do the right thing)

Did the Samaritan do just enough to feel good about himself? (No, The Samaritan took him to the inn and paid for his care and offered to pay for whatever the man needed while he was gone.)

How can we sacrificially help others?

The story today demonstrates that the Good Samaritan showed God’s love through his actions, not just his words. The others may have said they love God but their actions did not show it. We want to be sure our actions match our words.

BIBLE STORY ACTIVITY

Jesus told the story of the Good Samaritan to demonstrate how to show love to others around us. We can be kind to those around us and show them God’s love through our actions. Showing kindness when we do not have to or when it is not convenient shows others we care for them and more importantly God cares for them too! What are some ways we can show kindness? Showing kindness can be as big as giving someone food or clothing who does not have any. Kindness can also be as small as giving someone a smile as you pass by them at school or church. No matter our age we can be kind to those around us. Chose to complete one or more of the following activities.

ACTIVITY

Play this version of charades.  Use the cards or words that describe love from the Bible and have someone act it out while others guess the love being demonstrated. Example: the actor silently reads the card “Love protects”, they act out something that shows protection without using words, and everyone else guesses. Actor may use props and sound effects if desired.

Variations for younger audiences or 2 players:

  • parent reads the card and the child demonstrates it without anyone needing to guess.

  • Show the list of descriptive love words that audience can use to guess from using only 3 guesses.

ALTERNATIVE:

Help your child complete the Helping Hands paper with ways they can be a helper throughout this week. Stamp each day your child completes an activity they listed.

CREATE:

Create your own book retelling the story of The Good Samaritan.

Materials: White sheet of paper, Crayons or markers

ARTS & CAFTS

CRAFT 1

God is Love and he shows us love every day. He also gives us gifts to show his love. Use play dough to make a model of something God made for you that you really enjoy. For example, God gives us the ocean or animals or people who care for us. Make something that reminds you of God’s love for you.

Materials: Play dough or modeling clay

FOLLOW-UP

This week we learned that we can demonstrate God’s love by being kind to others. God is love and he shows love to us by the people he gives us and the world he created.

What does it mean to you that God is love?
Why does God want us to love others?

Can others see God’s love by how we treat them?

God sent Jesus to die for our sins so we can live forever with him. Do you think that shows love?

What ways can you show others God’s love at home, school, or church today?

Practical Application at Home

Showing others God’s love is a way to demonstrate to God that we love him.  In Matthew 25:34-46 it says that when we feed the hungry, clothe those without any, or take care of the sick, it is as if we are doing these kind things to Jesus. This week look for ways to show others you love them. Start with the people closest to you and then branch out. When you branch out to people outside of your family, work together as a family to demonstrate love to others.

ON YOUR OWN:

Give a hug

Write a nice note or draw a picture

Bring something needed without them asking, like a blanket, a glass of water, or slippers.

Clean something that you didn’t make dirty, without being asked.

AS A FAMILY:

Send someone a card in the mail just to say you are thinking of them.

Make “Jesus loves you” cards and hand them out to friends at church or leave the notes to be found.

Make cookies or treats to pass out at an assisted Living facility for a grandparent who may not have family visitors.
